hey! i love reading your thoughts on tma finale. they helped me to understand why i feel so underwhelmed and confused about the ending so thank you. i'm really interested in your thoughts on martin's characterization throughout s5 and why it feels off

Sorry this took a while to respond to. I wanted to be able to sit down and answer properly. First off so glad you enjoyed my posts!

For me one of the major reasons that S5 ultimately didn’t work is that in my opinion they grievously mishandled Martin’s character in arcs 2 and 3 of S5 to the point where he became a totally different person. Let me just say that “original Martin” (aka Martin as he was written in s1-4 and in the first arc of 5) was one of my all-time favorite characters not just in TMA but in any work ever. He is tremendously complex. And yes. He’s flawed. He can be petty. He can be jealous. He can be sharp.

BUT. He is also deeply loyal, kind, empathetic, brave, and selfless. Not to mention smart. Remember when he tricked Peter for all of S4 and when he acted nonchalant around Simon even thought he roller coaster threat frightened him? And he uses those skills to help others. In s4 he was willing to sacrifice himself, not just to help Jon but also to stop the Extinction and protect the world. In the end of s3 he intentionally antagonized Elias to act as a distraction, even though he knew the price. Despite his jealousy when he couldn’t be there for Jon is s4 he hoped Georgie would be and was sad when she turned her back on Jon.

He also always saw Jon’s humanity even when others didn’t and was quick to defend him. I remind you of all these things because this is not the Martin we see for most of S5 and I think when people re-listen they will start to notice the stark contrasts. Starting with arc 2 of S5 Martin went from being fierce, to being mean, from being capable of righteous wrath to being a bully. Martin went from someone who will stand up in defense of people or things he believes in and sharply call out behavior he thinks is wrong - whether Jon’s denial or people dehumanizing Jon - to someone who bullies and browbeats others into submission, who takes out his frustrations by undermining, humiliating, and snapping at his partner. These are not the same things. And this is not the same character.

“That’s a pretty sweeping claim” you say. “Do you have evidence?” Why yes I do! Keep reading.

Let’s look at a few scenes that remind us who Martin used to be. You’ll notice a much more thoughtful, deep, intelligent, compassionate, complex, and kind person than you may have gotten used to in the recent episodes.

First let’s look at the contrast between how Martin used to be the first to defend Jon vs how in arc 2 and 3 of s5 he totally stopped doing that and instead would gang up on Jon with others.

Remember? THIS is who Martin used to be. Fierce, brave, loyal, always willing to defend the people he cares about and perfectly willing to stare down horrible dangers to protect someone he loves.

It all started going wrong in arc 2 of s5. In arc 1 he was written in character imho, and we’ll look at some quotes from there in a little bit. But starting in mag 177 something seemed a little off though not too bad yet. Basira expresses disbelief that Martin could trust Jon and he says he trusts him but then just moves on.

He doesn’t really call her out for victim blaming Jon or for anything else. Still. His “Yes. I do.” is spoken quite firmly and at the time I wasn’t bothered too much by it. But it’s the start of a pattern. And from there on Martin’s character rapidly deteriorates. Until we get to Upton House and S5!Martin (aka the new character that replaced Martin for most of s5) makes his first fully fledged appearance.

Now at the TIME this whole exchange being off didn’t bother me because I assumed that they were being influenced by the Web and that we were later going to get a big reveal about how they got mind controlled or spidered or webbed or something at Upton. But nope! (I now have no idea what the whole point of the Upton interlude was, or why if they weren’t being mind controlled they went into the house that was obviously a trap).

Given this, Martin’s behavior is extremely odd and ooc. Jon is powerless and they are at the mercy of Salesa and Annabelle, both of whom they have reasons to distrust. Martin should not be relaxed. He should be concerned! Even more so than Jon since he has a clear head. And yet he dismisses Jon’s worries.

More than that, when Jon tries to use his powers to get Salesa to tell them honestly what is going on, and fails, Martin JOINS SALESA IN LAUGHING AT HIM. It is a horrifyingly chilling moment. Jon is completely powerless. There is an Avatar of the Web, his absolute worst fear, nearby and his only means of defending himself is useless. This is a time of tremendous vulnerability for him, and Martin laughs along with his captor?!

This must be a very frightening and upsetting moment for Jon. And not only is Martin not supporting or comforting him. He’s laughing at him. And Jon hates to be laughed at. Og!Martin would NEVER do that! He’d be trying to think of how to keep them safe in the situation. He’d be comforting Jon. He’d be snapping at whoever mocked him. But Martin never gets called on this nor do we get a reveal of how Upton was dangerous (or plot relevant!). The narrative seems to want us to accept Martin’s behavior as both acceptable and in character. When in reality it is neither.

And it continues! Martin is incredibly demeaning and unsupportive of Jon. He acts totally dismissive of Jon’s completely reasonable feelings of fear and mistrust.

“He’ll behave?!” WTF. What a demeaning thing to say! It’s especially concerning because this is who S5!Martin becomes as soon as Jon is vulnerable. Jon becoming physically/mentally/emotionally compromised is an excuse for Martin to be tremendously controlling, to dismiss his feelings and wants, and to dehumanize him and talk about him as though he is a pet or an unruly child. It’s very disturbing. Which would work great as horror. If we were meant to take it that way. I kept waiting for the reveal that this was all mind control but it never came.

This becomes increasingly pronounced throughout the remaining episodes. Look at them all deciding the fate of the world and Jon without any input from him in the end of the show. And look at Martin going right along with it.

Also remember how fearless og!Martin was when in danger, how brave? How even when he was very afraid of Simon and Peter he didn’t show it because he is good at repressing and concealing his emotions? Yeah. Not S5!Martin. Instead we get this exchange.

BASIRA

I will do as soon as you… Shut. Up.

[MORE AIMING. MARTIN GASPS, A WOODEN POLE FALLS OVER][DAISY PAUSES, SNIFFS THE AIR, THEN RESUMES CONSUMPTION]

[Hushed, angry] The hell was that!?

MARTIN

Sorry! Sorry! I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!

ARCHIVIST

What happened?

MARTIN

I-I thought you were about to fire.

BASIRA

So you gasped, just in case?

MARTIN

Look, it’s a tense situation, alright? I don’t know what I’m doing here. I’m not a sniper –

Also, let’s remember that Martin was never as much of a pushover as people seem to think. He and Jon only bonded AFTER Martin stood up to him and called him out and Jon admitted that he was afraid and they started to see each other as real people. This happened when Martin called Jon out rather fiercely for his skepticism.

That was in episode 39. Very early in their relationship. So Martin constantly yelling at Jon in s5 and never listening to him and belittling him isn’t him “learning to stand up for himself.” He already learned that. og!Martin was defined by his repressed thoughts and anger that he learned to express. He always had these thoughts. At first he was just too shy to voice them though. Also they were tempered by compassion. When Jon explains that he does believe, he’s just scared Martin’s anger fizzles out. Because og!Martin is kind. Also remember that Jon’s leg is injured in this encounter and he can’t run. Martin chooses to stay with him rather than leave and save himself. Later in mag 40 he starts crying and apologizing because they got separated in the tunnels and he thought he left Jon to a horrible fate.

And look at early s5, when og!Martin was still there. Look at these scenes and notice how empathetic he is, how supportive. How he doesn’t blame Jon and provides comfort and support instead of just putting the weight of everything on Jon and telling him doesn’t want to hear about anything or make any decisions (only to turn around and blame Jon for every decision and every piece of information he didn’t share when Martin was the one who asked him to keep quiet). Instead. He is there for him and trying to help him with firmness and compassion. He doesn’t dehumanize him and he helps shoulder the emotional burden. Also while they do argue the arguments lack the viciousness of their later debates and are more equal. Jon snaps and then apologizes. Whereas later it’s just Martin constantly yelling at and blaming Jon and throwing awful accusations (like comparing him to Jonah! WTF!) and being tremendously hurtful while Jon begs for forgiveness.

These are just a few examples but they really illustrate how Martin as he was written in s1-4 and arc 1 of s5 and Martin as he was written in arcs 2 and 3 of S5 are totally different characters. But the narrative treats them as the same. We’re supposed to keep rooting for Jonmartin even tho Martin is no longer the character we know and love and consequently the relationship now has a totally different dynamic. I love Jon being with og!Martin. S5!Martin is frankly a toxic and abusive partner. And the fact that he isn’t treated as such by the narrative makes me uncomfortable. And it makes a lot of the season not work for me because the moments that are supposed to be “sweet” and happy between a couple we’re supposed to root for don’t strike me that way. Also s5!Martin is frankly a much less interesting character than og!Martin.

So yeah. I love og!Martin. I hate s5!Martin both as a character and a person and I think a lot of the problems with s5 stem from the way he was mishandled as a character.

I'm not sure I agree that he was fine in arc 1? The first red flag I had about him was him brushing off Jon's hesitation about smiting avatars, everything from there felt more like a gradual downhill than sudden change

@intpdreamer yeah that's definitely valid! to me personally he still felt mostly ic in arc 1. and that felt more within the range of a believable perspective/flaw he might have and which might get resolved later on. (if Martin was an avatar he should have had to come to terms with that and struggled with what it meant for his humanity). the problem is this never happens. so I can see how in light

of later stuff it can definitely read like more evidence of martin's moral decline in s5. it doesn't strike me as being as egregious as later examples but definitely a good point! esp given the context of the later stuff.

TBH I feel like problems with season 5 Martin are caused by Jonny following the mantra that conversation is most compelling when it involves conflict. Through the whole series he pushes the conflict button a bit too hard too often- particularly when it comes to characters being critical of John.

Avatar

Jonny uses characters interacting with John as foils and sounding boards for potential reads and interpretations of John and their situation. This makes their pairing read as more antagonistic than it should be at times because Martin becomes the one taking the conflict button presser role out of lack of other options.

@grimogretricks this analysis is right on the money. it's absolutely a question of mechanical concerns of story overtaking character writing

This was so helpful, thank you! There had always been something “off” about the last season for me, and I couldn’t quite figure it out. This is a HUGE part of what it was for me, if not the whole thing!

@timeiscyclical ah! thank you so much for saying this. I'm so glad this helped you nail down what didn't work for u about the season.

@iamnmbr3 thanks for the level of detail and the transcripts to support your point. Very well put together, and convincing

@timeiscyclical you are very welcome! :))

More like this

WAIT SORRY IM BACK!!!! s5 plot twist could be martin kills jon and it seems like a completely human endeavor. Only for them to only find jons body in the wreckage and martin to have seemingly disappeared (because he was working for the web the whole time and left to go off to the other worlds and we get like a quick audio clip of martin interacting with jon of the alternate universe) like I know it’d be a push but if a bunch of tweaks were made through season five and a couple previously than like. Idk it would have made me go feral. OKAY NOW IM GONE BYYYYYE

No need to apologize! I love getting asks. Everyone should always feel free fee to come into my inbox to talk about whatever.

Ooh that’s a cool idea. Personally I don’t think a Martin was web the WHOLE time reveal would have been satisfying because I think it would have undermined a lot of the weight of things from earlier seasons. (I talked about why here). However I think Martin getting webbed in s5 would have worked nicely. I think probably originally he went with Annabelle bc she webbed him and that’s why his reasons for going with her never really made sense -bc originally it wasn’t of his own accord but they kept the same plot point without really thinking of a new reason. I mean. He had no reason to trust Annabelle. Also since she had the camera he couldn’t even be sure Jon would save him.

Also it would have added to the horror because the Web might have tried to sow doubt in Jon’s mind about when Martin got webbed. It could have tried to make him suspect that Martin got webbed when they were separated in 172 or even that he had been Web the whole time and their love was fake. Jon could have eventually seen through that and overcome it and reaffirmed their love and then tried to get revenge on the web before either failing or succeeding in the end and maybe having a final confrontation with Spiders Martin. (And having to deal with the question of “How much is this just the Web and how much is it still Martin?). Directions like this would have created a real sense of urgency in the last few episodes and created some powerful vectors for tragedy and horror.

It’s not that I mind sending the fears through as an ending. I just wish the significance had been engaged with more. If Jon and Martin strongly argued for each side that would have been more powerful to me. The horror of letting their world suffer and die vs the horror of dooming billions more to dreadful fates. Instead bc Jon just suddenly is like “oh ok” and all the other characters seem to have no issue with or guilt over sending the fears through the crack it just comes off like the narrative wants us to think of it as a happy ending. It’s especially weird since there is no reason established why they couldn’t just trap the fears in the TMA world and send all the PEOPLE through the gap to new worlds where they could be safe.

I will also be forever sad over the handling of Martin’s character. Martin was one of my all time favorite characters in anything up through the beginning of S5. Then from arc 2 onwards the way he was written suddenly changed and he became a parody of his former self. Again. If he had been webbed that would explain the character inconsistencies and the way he went from always standing up for Jon to constantly undermining him, or how he went from having empathy for the victims to not caring about them and saying things like he didn’t feel sorry for Salesa’s victims because he didn’t know them. Instead we just got ooc behavior for no reason and also no character development after he had such a fascinating arc in earlier seasons.

Can I just say thank you for expressing your opinion on the ending. I didn't like it either and I felt so bad. Like the tragedy felt kinda unwarranted? I don't know I was expecting to feel sad because of the ending but instead I feel sad because of the writing

Ah no worries! *Hugs* At least Mag1-160 form a complete and coherent whole with a good stopping point. Nothing from s5 or the ending can take away all the good writing and characterization from earlier on and because 160 is such a good ending for a cosmic horror tragedy you can relisten and stop there and have a fully satisfying conclusion the narrative. but yea “I was expecting to feel sad because of the ending but instead I feel sad because of the writing” sums it up perfectly. what even was that? Jon’s about-face made no sense to me and so much stuff was left unresolved.

A lot of plot lines felt pointless. What was the point of building up Annabelle as a character when she served a completely generic role? (Also hate how she had so many parallels to Jon as a victim but none of her trauma was addressed and instead she was portrayed as a generic monster. Give her the complexity and agency she deserves!). What was the point of introducing the camera? Why would the web start the apocalypse to prevent it? If its plan was just to spread to other worlds then why did none of the characters react or experience a moment of terrible regret for having believed the Web? (Also why would they believe the Web to begin with?). Why were there so many spiders at the Institute? What was the deal with Gertrude and Agnes?

What was the point of the Upton House interlude? If Salesa wasn’t in league with the Web why did he know stuff about Jon and Martin as though he had been listening to the tapes? How did Annabelle know to find him? Why did Jon and Martin walk into the house while being so glib and giggling? I assumed the Web was influencing them but that doesn’t seem to have been the case? Why did no one else get suspicious of the lighter if it only affects Jon? Why was the lighter so powerful? Where did it come from? Why couldn’t Jon see through it? Why does the Web have the ability to see the future?

Why did Martin get to yell at Jon for going behind his back but Jon didn’t get to yell at Martin for doing the same thing to him? Why are none of Martin’s mistakes or flaws ever called out by the other characters? Why does he get to criticize Jon for things he does himself as well? What even happened in this ending? I couldn’t follow it and the character motivations made no sense to me, which completely undercut the tragedy.

160 put so many things into perspective and gave a deeper meaning to a lot of things. S5 didn’t really change anything for me. Relistening post s4 makes you go “ohhhh” at so many things but relistening post s5 will be basically the same. Ultimately for me this season didn’t add anything and felt like it wasn’t planned as carefully as the earlier seasons. Mag200 didn’t address a lot of the issues with the season or fix the many plot holes that emerged. BUT the first 4 seasons remain perfect and have a very satisfying ending point so I will still be able to enjoy the show, unlike something like GoT that just...doesn’t have an ending point bc the finale was botched.

TMA S5 (derogatory)

ok I swear this is my last post on this but I find it very strange given the themes of the story that the final message was that passing on your problem to billions of other people and hurting them so you and those in your circle can live a better life is ok because you don't know those other people so it's fine not to care about them and you should just let them take responsibility for fixing the problems you created for them.

I guess I'm just struggling with understanding what the point of season 5 was. If TMA was supposed to be a cosmic horror tragedy why not end in with episode 160? S1-4 is extremely well plotted and all felt like part of a coherent whole narrative building towards 160 which ends with a bang that also deepens your appreciation of past episodes and makes re-listening even more enjoyable. I feel like ending it there might have been a better choice since to me this season and this ending didn’t really add anything. They almost felt tacked on.

When I compare this ending to 160 it really just comes up short. 160 was an emotionally powerful moment that also MAKES SENSE. which is WHY it's emotionally powerful. 160 makes you go “OMG! OHHHHH! NOW I GET IT! OH NO!” This ending just made me go “huh???? what??? why are they doing that?? Oh that’s it? Ok then.” 160 felt like a much more fitting and better plotted and built up ending for a cosmic horror tragedy show. For me S5 never really justified its existence.

I think one of my issues is that this felt very underwhelming compared to comparable episodes in previous seasons. The third to last episode of season 4 was MAG158: Panopticon. The third to last episode of season 3 was The Masquerade. The third to last episode of season 5, the final season, the climax of the WHOLE STORY was...this.

Jonmartin

Ship It

1) What made you ship it?

Ok I’m gonna be real. I already knew it was canon before I started listening BUT if I hadn’t known, because of the kind of person I am I definitely would have started shipping it after “but I don’t really count Martin.”

2) What are your favorite things about the ship?

I loved their dynamic in s1-4 and the beginning of s5. I loved how they were similar kinds of people and had similar shared trauma that shaped them in different ways. Jon’s early rejection made him standoffish and outwardly prickly despite his soft heart. And Martin despite his inner fierceness became outwardly very compliant and eager to please. Despite that they both have strong principles and are deeply loyal people who are also very selfless and willing to sacrifice not just for people they care about but also to protect mankind (remember Martin was willing to die to stop the Extinction, not just for Jon’s sake but because he cared about the world).

hot take: I'm no web!Martin truther but it would have made the finale make more sense. The web has always been one of the weakest powers for me conceptually but at its best its power is in how it makes you think your decisions are yours. Jon's love for Martin caused him to make the decision that leads to the web's success. This might have even incorporated that conversation they had where Martin said they wouldn't have gotten together under different circumstances.

I have several thoughts on this. First, personally I don’t think a “SIKE! Martin was web all along!” twist would have been good (nor do I think it is what they ever intended) because that would undermine too much of the earlier series. The “Elias was Jonah all along” reveal or the “Jon was actually he ritual the whole time” didn’t undermine past moments; those reveals added depth. They made it so when you re-listened you noticed a ton of stuff or appreciated seemingly bland scenes at a deeper level (aka on second listen you get all of Jonah’s awful and awfully funny jokes). If Martin was web the whole time it wouldn’t work like this. Instead it would just take away from his character development and his emotional arc with Jon through the first 4 seasons. So I don’t think that would have been good.

HOWEVER, there was a lot of build up and foreshadowing with Martin and the web and spiders that seemed to be setting up for something to happen with Martin and the web. That seems to have been dropped in the second half of season 5.

And I think the reason for this was that in the original plan the Spiders Martin plot line in s5 happened. The reason he went with Annabelle when it made no sense was that in the original plan he didn’t go of his own free will. She took him and filled him with spiders. Jon went after him but it was too late. Or the camera prevented him from doing anything. Perhaps he even had to watch it happen. For some reason they cut this but tried to follow the same beats of Martin going with Annabelle and Jon going after him and then Martin serving the Web’s plan in the tower. But without Spiders Martin none of these things really made sense and there was no emotional weight or tensions or drama....or horror or tragedy.

Martin suffering a horrific fate so close to the end would have been incredibly tragic. And horrifying. As is right for a horror tragedy. You could also see this driving Jon over the edge emotionally. Maybe at first he agree to go along with the Web’s plan hoping it will send the fears elsewhere and free Martin. But maybe in the end he realizes it’s too late or realizes he’d be condemning infinite other people to similar fates and decides to end it. Maybe he succeeds. Or maybe Spiders Martin turns on him. Either way you have a much more high stakes and dramatic series of final episodes. Instead characters just do things for no reason and suffer no consequences for monumentally stupid actions and the emotional tone is flat and uninteresting.

I’m really sad about how they handled the Web. Idk why they decided to give it random precognitive powers and make it this uber special Mary Sue fear that is conscious when they could have just used it to explore themes of fate, choice, free will, and memory instead. How much of you is “you”? How much is your identity based on your memories and what happens if you lose those or have them changed or edited? Does free will even exist? If you only have one viable choice does it really count as choosing? Etc. The Web could have raised really interesting questions and been so scary. Instead Jonny gave it random new powers and made it different from all the other fears but in a way that actually made it less interesting rather than more interesting.
